Folk Revival
1968-1975

This exuberant and spirited era of interiors will appeal to anyone who loves to see and be inspired by interiors that are full of passion, ingenuity, and, above all, intensely personal and decorative settings.

The Folk Revival which began in the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s was a celebratory time when the lifestyle of artists presented a provocative challenge to conventional society. The homes and work of members of this group were strongly rooted in a "back to nature" philosophy, and in the complete and total rebellion of the conservative lifestyles of their parents young college students began to rebel against conventional interiors, fashion and social norms.

This is when the country really began it's GO GREEN campaign. Young people embraced the early American Frontier lifestyle with daddy's credit card firmly in hand, leaving the axe and shovel in the tool shed where they belonged. Sadly, this gave the movement a kind of transparent self absorbed quality that to this day reverses the period's stability to be taken seriously.

The exuberance of the era, however contrived, ushered in the return of color. Bright and multi-mixed. An "anything goes" free spirit of decoration that shunned the minimalism  and muted colors of the late Modernism era and brought back artistic freedom. Folk style often means decorating on a shoestring with improvised and impoverished furnishings from cast-offs, conjuring idiosyncratic magic from the eclectic and the everyday.

Everything old is new again with a Folk Revival ideology. Easily applied decorating ideas are: fast and inexpensive painting embellishments for furniture, floors, and walls; surface adornments using simple collage, mosaic, macrame and other sculptural forms and informal fabric treatments to enliven windows, chairs, and sofas. Don't forget your velvet Elvis paintings, strobe lights and lava lamps. Dude... where's the bong?
