The original custom DUNBAR creations were the finest buggies and horse drawn carriages for the gentry class. With the introduction of the automobile, DUNBAR wisely transformed into one of America’s premier fine furnishings companies. In 1931, destiny brought Edward J Wormley, a young twenty three year old furniture designer with a fresh new perspective, to the doors of DUNBAR. A gifted designer and student of furniture history, Wormley inspired a global perspective and was instrumental in the introduction of world-class design philosophies into the American interior landscape. With a passion for quality and an eye for detail, Wormley found a perfect partner for his talent in DUNBAR, and remained with the company as Design Director for over three decades. During the middle of the 20th century, DUNBAR and Edward J Wormley became true icons in American design and furniture history. In 1950, The Chicago Merchandise Mart joined with the Museum of Modern Art to sponsor the GOOD DESIGN exhibition. The annual exhibition, designed to commend selected home furnishings for their “excellent appearance and progressive performance,” was often a platform of recognition for DUNBAR. Over a three year period, Wormley’s creations for DUNBAR dominated the exhibition with an astonishing thirty unique designs receiving GOOD DESIGN designations. Today, DUNBAR Furniture continues the legacy of design integrity and innovation. Our focus remains on providing custom specified handcrafted furnishings designed by Edward J Wormley. The introduction of new designs from exciting International designers is also on the horizon. Roxy Theater Love Seat, Red
Personally, I have always wanted a seat or two for my hallway; they don’t take up much space. It’s easy to plunk down some overstuffed shopping bags, and questionable guests can be isolated and parked in situ. Our cinema love seats in cherry wood, French finished, accommodate people as well as shopping bags, coats, boots, etc, being nearly indestructible. M. 45 x 103 x 80.5cm,

One of the wagons of the famous Simplon-Orient Express, departing daily
from the Gare de Lyon for Istanbul in the 1920s, was fitted out as a
small, intimate cinema. The rows of two chairs on each side of the wagon were separated by a red carpet. When in motion the movie screen shuddered
and swayed with the rhythmic movement but Douglas Fairbanks Sr. remained
heroic, if silent. The folding seats were wood, finished in a rich deep
red. 
One of the more eccentric male members of my extended family always traveled with a complete 1879 edition of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, all 35 volumes of it. Call it intellectual or obsessive compulsive. The man drove ship’s pursers and Chef de Trains to distraction but somehow always managed to wangle additional cabinets in his cabin. Our stateroom cabinet would have pleased him with its space for cameras, Baedeker guides, boots and tins of Malossol caviar to store next to 
his Brittanica. Drawers and doors, heavy bronze hardware, beautifully stained in red and honey or black and honey.
